The headline is a bit sensational. The bug only manifests in rare conditions, like large file writes, and the error state resolves on reboot. Additionally, it only affects some models of drives. Still. Good to be made aware of. Thanks for sharing!
Windows 11 24H2 update breaks SSDs/HDDs, may corrupt your data
Whoa holy shit what
[…] the update triggered storage failures that cause drives to disappear, making them and their corresponding SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) unreadable by the OS, according to a new report. The issue purportedly surfaces during heavy write operations to certain NVMe SSDs as well as HDDs, especially when continuous sustained writes approach 50 GB on drives and exceed 60 per cent controller usage. This could potentially lead to a “high likelihood of file corruption when symptoms occurs” adds the report (Translated from Japanese by Grok AI).
… oh
Why always with the clickbaity headlines?
Happened to one of my drives some months ago.
Drive wasnt mounted, couldnt be read. Diskmanagement displayed “GPT protected partition”.
In the end I bought a new drive (that was on some December day before Christmas Eve) and restored from backup.Fun times to test the restore.
Why always with the clickbaity headlines?
Because it gets people to click. Duh. So thanks for saving us the click and reducing their site traffic with your comment.
Can’t wait to try this update on some of my work computers.😈
