I hate the phrasing of this title. It makes it sound like it’s already happened. It should be Will Perplexity be the first AI unicorn to fail?.

I’ve only heard of Perplexity because I got a free year from my cell provider. Also does anyone else feel like this article is missing punctuation or something?

Strong agree on the lack of punctuation.

Medium has become a bit of a cesspool for low-effort hot takes. Sometimes the articles make a great point but are not very well written (as is the case with this one). But more often than not they are a single, unfounded, absurd rage-bait argument that’s been spun out into an article with the help of AI.

Definitely. But, given most of the glitches are comma splice, joinwords, or just plain punctuation missing, is this the best venue to point that out? The only thing worse than the punctuation here is the apologists.

This article didn’t even go into the service disruptions Perplexity has had the past couple of weeks. In short, the best thing Perplexity does is give you access to multiple models at once, but frequently when you try to select one for a specific thread, it will throw an error and (quietly) kick the response to your prompt to a backup.

Perplexity’s calling it a technical issue but it looks more like throttling, especially considering API access to Claude is expensive and that’s the one that is having the most “technical issues.” I would have already gone elsewhere if my sub wasn’t free, and if it continues to be this bad, I might end up going elsewhere anyway.

Could this be the run-up to Apple acquiring Perplexity? I remain convinced that Apple defending their internal AI division shows they are close to a major acquisition and are just waiting for a valuation dip on one of the major competitors. Distribution is a solved problem for Apple, what they need is proven usecases and a competitive tech stack.

That said, search and consolidating multiple model APIs isn’t a great match for what Apple needs, and their optics aren’t great. My bet is still on Apple acquires Anthropic in 2026.

Some companies buy other companies to let them die – strategically, some companies buy other companies to get their features/talents but remove any trace of that company or that design language, or so. Some companies buy other companies to control competition. Apple seems to buy other companies for doing nothing at all. They have so much money that they buy other companies, but they are so bad at software that they can’t figure out what to do with it after that.

It’s sad stating this as an iPhone/Mac user (but not an Apple fan – yes, there’s a distinction), but even if Apple is able to buy Google in its entirety, they will not be able to fix search in any part of the Apple ecosystem.

All of them should fail. We don’t need all this shit on such big scale. It just chokes the planet.

I am using only perplexity pro, it’s my main AI assistant and really, the only one I have left while I have purged others. I have tried quite a few but perplexity seems to be doing the best for what I need AI for. Which is mostly doing the “Google” job.

I use them, but I wouldn’t pay for them unless there are no other competing products that are similar for free or less price.

They’re just reselling someone else’s model anyway.

Lets hope so! They manipulated the first Deepseek model, and reinserted US propaganda and garbage lies into the llm again. So even before groqopedia (sigh), Perplexity were the first private AI corporation that openly felt they were competent/unbiased enough to decide what ‘truth’ is, and they took it upon themselves to ‘fix’ the information before the information went to their users. Oh, thank you benevolent Perplexity Unt’s, for protecting us all against wewil ! (sigh)

After that ideological stunt, they simple cant be trusted for ANY information! They have shown that THEIR interpretation of ‘truth’ is the real truth, and that they have the GOD-GIVEN right, to alter other sources pf truth, on behalf of their users. So, all their users are victims of that ideological sh*t perspective. Perplexity WILL just re-doctor information as they, and their sponsors, see fit. Perplexity are just another US propaganda outlet - opinions sold for profit - and the sooner they collapse the better for humanity.

Well, oc all the other big AI corporations and their Unt owners/ceo’s do the same - just behind closed doors, so I’m eagerly waiting for the whole US AI bubble to collapse and pull down everything else with it… Go go China, Bricks+ and all of the global ‘south’ !

Reinserted US propaganda? Like the ability to talk about Tianamen Square? Man, Chinese propaganda is the worst. Fuck off back to .ml with that.

It wasn’t even removed from deepseek. Ask it to tell you about it in Spanish and it will. It’s only filtered on the output side, and only in English and Chinese, as far as I tested.
