Sense the steam deck came out there have been so many github projects for linux and gaming just due to the fact people feel like they are apart of the community. Steam tinkers launcher has been amazing and I wish I had that 8 years ago when I barely knew how to make a wineprefix.

And that shits happening all over again and we are going to get a lot of improvements with fex, and waydroid with the soon release of the steam frame. Fex and waydroid will be crutial for someone trying to fork android, or make a Linux based arch64 os. The work is already benifiting lots of people. Sadly gamesir seems to be the only one taking advantage of this and they’re rather shitty of a company.

Say what you will of steam being a monopoly, and still being a evil corperation I’m all for it. But the world is not so black and white and sometimes you gotta side with the bad guys because at this moment it benifits you more. At any time steam can start forcing digital ID to play mature games, or start doing weird shit.

I can’t say the same for companies like nvidia or epic who are now trying to weasle in. Who are completely closed source and don’t have anything that directly helps the community at large. Steam at least gives you the tools to make your own open source steam deck/steam machine competitor because if despite all odds you make a popular consolex most people are still going to end up putting steam on it. That dynamic can change at any moment, but in the now I’m allowed to pick my favorite corperation and willfully ignore a lot of glaring issues, because to me the benifit outways the down sides. If I’m going to get fucked I at least want it to be comfortable, maybe missionary with some mutual kissing. I don’t like Sweeny, and don’t trust him. I don’t want him interested in Linux even if people do use his service and think it would be a benifit if it worked on linux.

I don’t know what he has planned but I can see him running some narative similar to his google play legal fight to try to throw around his power and take control, rather than just making a decent product. So to me I see Sweeny interested in Linux finally, I am trying to think what kind of lawsuit is he planning, or is he going to try to instil his own Linux kernal anti cheat spyware, etc, etc.

He only sued google for the 30% cut they took on fortnight, and though he deserved all the money to himself, while at the same time is trying to build his monopoly the epic playstore. Hes beefing with steam right now about Ai disclosure because he doesn’t want the games made with unreal engine to be labled as Ai slop due to his newest Ai update for unreal.

Yeah that’s amazing thats another translation layer thats vital for Linux phones.

Thats what im getting excited about. If someone makes use of all this progress we could have decent capable smart phones that at the very least have all the attractive software and apps which is the hardest part.

Sure getting the actual phone elements to work is still hard but we have a few options already and the main issue with those, is that no ones going to adopt it because they can’t use messenger or play candy crush anymore. They’re just boring phones again, and unless you find it fun writting code or playing in the terminal, it gets boring fast. Being able to play skyrim on your phone makes it sound like a fair trade off in some regards. People might be more willing to change their other habits and apps they used if there was at least one solid source of dopamine. I don’t know if you guys noticed but every app is basicially made to hijack your reward center, and switching to a privacy phone is like quiting smoking cold turkey.

Just to use YouTube like a normal person on newpipe I have to change my IP every couple of hours when YouTube bans me. So much of privacy focused experience is becoming that as these big companies push out anyone who isnt signed into a I’D verified account, and stuff like that is painful to do for the average person. I’m filled with spite so I will do everything in my power to make it harder to collect my data, but most people aren’t like that. There’s gotta be SOMETHING that gives privacy phones some hype, or momentum.

Android support is to run the apks that the meta quests use to play natively, sense they just use a modified version of android they’re pretty much mobile phones already.

But yes this does mean steam is adding support for apks technically. I just don’t know if that means we will get steam on android. It just means that for sure they are allowing developers to choose to let you run the apk or the scaled version of the PC version.

Most likely the PC versions are going to run worse for a good while, but this is when it will it will start to improve the most.

Technically sense the steam frame runs on arm its technically native but because its on arch64 they will need something like waydroid if that’s not what they are already using.

Also I’ve used both of those forks I think, I don’t remember which one I prefer I have to relearn everything everytime I tinker with it. I don’t really use those apps but when I get new phones or arm based gaming handhelds I gotta put it through the ringer first to see what it can do.

Thats basically gamehub on android. There’s other forks of it that arent as shitty but I still don’t really intend on using it outside of checking up on progress every now and then. I think gamehub is gamesir the company that locks their switch emulator based off stolen code, and requiring physically for you to use one of their controllers. So I don’t like the idea of them in general, even ignoring the privacy issues.

But I do hope that steam os becomes popular for this. If I understand it correctly the frame is going to run off arch64 and use a combo of android, and fex translation layers so it will be extreamly versatile. Right now one of the closes things I experienced is Ubuntu touch, but you have to do everything in libertine containers and even native Linux apps don’t always work well, along with waydroid.

The progress with fex is already impressive and if it matures anything like proton did, it might be just as simple. I can throw a pirated Photoshop 1.6 cs or something into bottles with proton ge and it works. Sure might not be the version anyone wants anymore but I can say “we have Photoshop” now.

Even if people don’t use steam is directly I think there will be community made projects that essentially just bundle in almost the same experience using the same tools valve is using. Kinda like how bazzite or cachyos make it easy to have a steam deck experience out of the box and focuses on more gaming specific utilities that the steam deck comes bundled with.

And its not going to be good right away. Proton kind of sucked when the the first steam decks where released. It has to be out there and start getting put through the paces, people need to be making reports on protondb, etc. When I got a q2 steam deck it was pretty much only the indie games and native Linux games that worked fine. Outside of that it didnt work or there was actual fiddling you had to do, and protonGE was more nessisary to use over proton.

The hardest part is everyone needs universal hardware. The os would have to be made for a few select phones, because with these bundles of translation layers like gamehub its a lot of tweaking and toggling on and off stuff that you don’t always fully know what it does or understand why you need it. Sometimes you have a shitty processor so you have to toggle a different series of settings to get them to work with your hardware, and the experience isnt always going to be the same.

Despite all the criticism against them that I agree with I still personally like then and click in their videos every now and then.

What I appreciate the most is the are constantly pushing Linux often even if they are misguided, and they have a large audience of rather normal people.

I do think they are positively contributing to linuxs growth, and helps normalize devices like the steam deck.

We need more casual stupid users for Linux to ever hit the year of the desktop.

Ubuntu touch has a widr selection of devices that are 90% completed and at the bareminimum do what you want.

You don’t even need a shitty slow phone. Some of the oneplus phones work and they run on a snapdragon 845-865 which are the golden standard when it comes to emulation and other harder processes. I think the 845’s source code got leaked too so often projects will only work for that chip.

I keep hoping if I say it enough I can will it into existence but I really think that thr steam frame is going to usher in a community made phone/tablet that runs on arch and uses fex just like the steam frame does.

So many community projects poped up on github when the steam deck was released, and people been using proton in third party apps. Hell other distros have their own “steam deck” mode that just boots into big picture mode. I truely think that fex, and the work valve is putting into(or funding) arm64, is going to be more valuable than the steam frame itself. Gamehub app is already using the work valve put in with fex, and arm translation layers you can play red dead on a modern mid range pocco phone at 720p fps. And that’s the exe PC version not the Netflix apk.

So I tried sailfish os on a volla s23 or 22 I don’t remember the name. and I was kind of underwhelmed by it. I didn’t spend much time there, the community port didn’t support the proprietary software I would of had to use waydroid which I felt like defeated the point. So I am not sure I gave it enough time or a proper chance.

To me sailfish os felt much more like a solid phone experience, but with Ubuntu touch felt much more framiliar, and felt more versatile because of that. Though the experience with Ubuntu touch felt much more like a computer with a horrible gnome interface that is not intuitive, and you never get used to it.

I hear people say a lot of good things about sailfish and I wish I knew what I was looking for, because I was underwhealmed and I really really want a solid Linux phone. Graphene os is cool but in the long run I feel its best to remove ourselves from android, and also a Linux phone is already the perfect cyberdeck so its just cool.
