We must hammer home the personal downsides that outweigh any perceived security benefits. Go to your city council meeting, but before you go, look up what information data brokers have for sale about each city council member. Say the creepy shit you found about them to their face to make the privacy invasion real to them personally.

(The recent GamersNexus story about LG spying showed him doing this at his local city council meeting and the looks on the board members’ faces clearly showed that they went from not paying any attention to the boring meeting to actively shitting their pants and trying to hide it. It was glorious.)

This is terrible and useless security advice. There is actually a whole lot you can do besides just giving up.

The stated justification is that it somehow catches forgeries that altered the front of an ID but didn’t make the barcode information match. That might have been justifiable in like 1980 or something, but it’s reaaaaaaally not hard to generate the correct barcode these days if you’re forging an ID.

The real reason is to track and sell more data about you.

It’s good to be skeptical, but please don’t give this particular article toooo much weight. It’s not a real experiment, it’s just just an observation of correlation which doesn’t prove anything at all.

This website can show you plenty of other things that are extremely highly correlated. It really doesn’t prove anything.

If your login flow is so complicated that it’s dropping people, it just means that you’re letting sales and marketing assholes add things to it that don’t need to be there, instead of letting the engineers and designers do their jobs.
