Hey folks, on the beehaw instance we’re trying to keep technology clean, and we’ve centralized all reddit threads to the following link:
A note to others to take heed that beehaw instances defederate other subs because they don’t want to deal with moderation and not to open accounts there.
Alternate headline: Reddit CEO Steve Huffman attempts to gaslight the entire world.
Most of what he’s been saying about this whole mess has been either outright lies or half-truths with facts conveniently not mentioned.
Third party apps made reddit what it is. There was no official app when I joined, and without baconreader I probably would never have become a daily user. Then they launch a piece of shit official app that is clearly only designed to separate it’s users from their money. No mod tools, no ADA support, etc. Unfortunately they will survive, but it’ll go the way of Facebook or Twitter or any other social media app that went corporate and become a shell of it’s former self.
Except Reddit made its own app. If it is not designed for that then why try to push it. The Reddit API is not stopping apps working. It is the financial cost that is stopping them work. Something Reddit’s own crappy app does not have to endure.
Not only did they make their own app, but there was an 11 year gap between launching Reddit (2005, granted smartphones weren’t a thing then) and when they launched their Official app (2016, well into the smartphone era exploding). And Reddit bought the iOS 3rd party Reddit app Alien Blue in 2014. It’s crazy of him trying to push the story that Reddit was never intended to be used by 3rd party apps.
no of course not, third-party apps and unpaid mods have been supporting reddit for ages though 👍
