OK I was lost for a minute because my Debian system installed version 1.9 through the PPA (my first Matrix setup that I just built last week), which I now see appears to be in development and testing. Does anyone happen to know if there’s a PPA which installs the current stable version on Debian? The installation I have now just points here:
deb http://packages.matrix.org/debian/ bullseye main
Ohhhh! OK thanks, there’s a lot of different versions for the various parts then. Still new to this software so I’m not yet clear on which parts do what… but I’ll get there.

As i understand this: 1.9 refers to the synapse version you are probably using. https://github.com/matrix-org/synapse/releases/tag/v1.90.0
This post is talking about the matrix spec version 1.8
