Investors seemed to interpret the potential tariff exemptions as a positive for Apple and other major tech companies that have been making huge financial commitments to manufacture more chips and other components in the U.S.

Big Tech already has made collective commitments to invest about $1.5 trillion in the U.S. since Trump moved back into the White House in January. That figure includes a $600 billion promise from Apple after the iPhone maker boosted its commitment by tacking another $100 billion on to a previous commitment made in February.

I do wonder how many of these commitments will come to pass and to what extent these are merely elements of a negotiation strategy.

      Well that’s really it.

You only need to say you are going to do something so Trump gets his headline. There is no need to actually follow through. I think companies are starting to realise that.

It would be embarrassing for Trump to admit if the investment doesn’t happen or if jobs aren’t coming back. So the office of fake statistics will swing into action to make claims.

I’m sure US will switch to 4x more expensive domestic chip production in no time /s. If they really had capacity which they won’t no matter the announcements.

They’ll just throw together some fabs overnight using magic, and staff them with all that engineering talent the USA is currently deterring from coming and/or deporting.

They will to avoid the tarriffs that are 5x.

Personally i believe the tarrifs should have been a percentage target with increasing penalties when not met. But going full bore works too just is a more painful transition.

mmm? has aged fine. no one said manufacturing would come back over night. dont take me for a trumpy. fucker is insane. but tarriffs are not the inherently bad thing the finance bros try to tell you they are. if they were you wouldnt see companies trying to get laws in place that protect them from competition. the fact is they are effective at driving economic change.

The last time trump went nutty on tarrifs and we had supply chain issues has lead to durable changes in how companies have structured their supply chains. Unfortunately for the companies they missed the underlying trend both trump and biden went for (bringing manufacturing back to the states)

The problem we have is that liberals (both rep and dem) have systematically fucked over the middle class for 4 decades so now the know how has to be retrained and the capitalists bitch and moan. You dont fix 4 decades of outsourcing in a couple months it takes years.

how tariffs are being implemented is absolutely retarded (aka: no actual coherence or thought put into them).

edit: if you’re referring to the jobs numbers released recently. that was happening well before trumpette took office. He just pushed it into over drive. because hes a moron and doesnt know how systems behave.

Ah i hadnt seen that. it aged perfectly fine in that context. they’re doing everything they can to avoid it. which was exactly my point. the fact trump is corrupt as fuck is immaterial to the original statement. they absolutely would if they had no other choices. sadly they have taco boy who is more than happy to be given money for favors.

                also: here you go

wasnt just a golden toy for the man child (not that I expect apple to deliver on the 600billion promise). As I told people back in august when it was clear the democrats were going to lose again by not supporting the working class: trump was going to give the democrats a master class in the exercising of executive power, used in ways decent people find abhorrent.

Man, that’s one of the clearest example of backfire efect I ever saw. I litteraly sad that they wouldnt have to do anything as long as they bend the knee and publicly kiss the ring. That’s exactly what happend. And in your mind you manege to spin it into “exactly my point!”. I bet you think you’re unusualy rational person capable of changing their mind in the presence of evidence… “If only everyone else would listen to reason!”, right? I’m not even mad, it’s acctualy an awesome case study. But I’ll stop right here. I don’t belive it will be productive.

They will not do anything, they will just say they do. A headline that you can quote to confirm your biases is all Trump need to keep you controled apparently.

it amuses me how much these companies are falling in line with the trump admin, everyone from facebook/google to harvard and you accuse me of falling in line. I’m just pointing out the reality of how these groups are behaving.

They do what they want, as long as they publicly kneel to kiss the ring from time to time. It’s the price oligars on the tsar’s leash tend to pay for the right to abuse all others. Nothing new under totalitarian sun.
