American here. I’m sure annexing Greenland would be very useful to us for all kinds of reasons. I don’t want to do it.

Unless the people in Greenland want to become part of the United States, I don’t believe we have any more right to declare Greenland ours than Hitler had a right to declare France his, or Russia has a right to declare Ukraine theirs.

If the people of Greenland want to become part of the United States, verified with an election monitored by multiple disinterested third parties, then by all means welcome to the party guys.

However given the timing of this ridiculous idea, I can’t help but think the whole thing is just a distraction from the Epstein files.

There has been leaks that US intelligence are making moves to influence the greenlandic people using intelligence gathering to find pro secession and US elements in greenland. Any talk of the possibility of greenland joining the US as a real possibility only legitimizes an eventual takeover. Greenland has made it clear that they are not interested and that such talk is an insult and a threat to their sovereignty and self governance, current and future. I don’t think you mean to promote Trumps talking points, so this is just meant to let you know that it indirectly does.

Unless the people in California want to secede from the United States

I wonder how you USians would respond to that.

Given that it is a part of our mainland continent, I would be less enthusiastic than if, say, Hawaii or Alaska wanted to secede.

Nonetheless, self-determination is a solidly American value. If an overwhelming majority of Californians wanted to leave the union, then in general I believe the rest of the country should let them. Otherwise we are forcing them to be subject to a national government they don’t want.

Americans also need to have a referendum to allow Greenland to join and Denmark needs to have a referendum to let them go as well, if it is too be all above board, as Greenland is subject to the Danish government.

That’s a very slippery slope. I am sure there are parts of Latvia that would happily join Russia. Or parts of US that would like to cede from the union. This is all but easy.

Yeah, if we really need anything from it we should work with the Greenlandic people and the Danes to find a mutually agreeable solution. Annexing territories of allies is evil and fucking stupid.

Can’t we just fly Trump to a random ice covered rock and just hire some people to pretend it is Greenland and he can have a little senior assisted living situation inside Trump Castle in Newer New York City, Greenland safely isolated from the rest of us?

Tell me you’re slacking off at your day job without telling me you’re slacking off at your day job:

Landry, in a post on X, thanked Trump: “It’s an honor to serve … in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the U.S. This in no way affects my position as Governor of Louisiana!

Yes this is a distraction - but we also need to remind ourselves that this shit isn’t normal even if it weren’t a distraction.

In the middle of the Clinton blow job scandal, Bill didn’t go off saying New Brunswick needed to become a state to secure our national supply of bowling balls or some shit.

Trump can be making a distraction and also moving the Overton Window at the same time.

The demand has been made- we are going to see his little temper tantrum any day now.
