What’s even nicer is not ever having any fat to lose to begin with but I aint no scientist either.
There is always a well-known solution to every human problem - neat, plausible, and wrong.
H. L. Mencken

It’s technically true but not the whole truth. Those calculations leave out certain costs such as the value of the stocks given to employees, the cost of training new models and revenue shared with partners like Amazon. It’s not that uncommon practice with technology companies when wanting to show inverstors a cleaner picture of the core business but it does not mean that the company as whole has become profitable.

Generally the benchmark for AGI has been “human level intelligence” meaning that from there on AI is also the best AI researcher and human input is no longer needed in developing it. That’s where the concept of singularity or intelligence explosion stems from.
The narrative here tends to be that it goes from AGI to ASI (Artificial Super Intelligence) very rapidly but in my view there’s not a significant difference between the two. AI that is as intelligent as a human but not more would still process information about a million times faster so effectively it would still be superintelligent.

That’s perfectly reasonable. I mostly take issue with the people claiming absolute certainty either way.

What good could hundred thousand of the world’s best scientists do for me if they had decades to study every question I asked and could answer them immediately?
Nothing I guess if you absolutely want to figure it all out by yourself.

That article reports that Anthropic told investors it expected one profitable quarter in 2026. It does not claim the company as a whole had become profitable.
Anthropic has raised large amounts of money by giving investors special instruments that can later turn into stock. When the company’s overall value rises a lot, the value of those instruments also rises. Accounting rules require the company to record that increase as a loss on its books, even though no cash actually went out the door to anyone. This explains about 72 of those 80 billion. It’s not actual money spent.

Anthropic has committed to spending at least $518 billion over a decade on cloud services, computing and infrastructure.
They’re betting everything on AGI. I don’t think anyone there at any point has even hoped that the tiny initial revenue streams would cover the absolutely gigantic upfront costs of setting everything up.
Now, whether they’ll actually reach AGI before this thing implodes is anyone’s guess. The people who claim that they absolutely will are full of shit just like the ones claiming they absolutely will not. Nobody knows and only time will tell.

I bet that poor bird is terrified out of it’s mind. I get that the owner surely ment well but the bird has no concept of what any of this means and this is just cruel.

We also don’t have an agreed upon definition for intelligence either. Most serious attempts at discussion about AI are doomed from the get go as we don’t even agree on the meaning of terms.

Please me as in fill the self-inflicted void I created by starving myself. That’s like breaking something just so you can take pleasure in fixing it.
Nah. I had high expectations for sex but it has been a letdown since my first time. I’m perfectly capable of scratching my own itch. I don’t need their help for it. You can have my sex too.

And starving myself makes shitty food more enjoyable as well but that just seems a bit backwards to me. Yet another thing to sacrifice from my own life just to please her.

Can’t say I’ve ever much enjoyed it myself either. It’s something I’ve always just done for her and I’m just happy to get it over with. One of the best things about being single is not having to even think about it.

You’re not trying to remove a moral status but deny it in the first place. That’s different but the end result of it still seems the same.
We used to justify the mistreatment of animals with the assumption that they had no subjective experience either. I’m not suggesting AI does but I’m also not claiming it with absolute certainty does not either, and the more we develop those systems, the more likely it seems to me that at some point there’s a good chance that they will.
The psychological drive behind the urge to call something with a derogatory term is the same in both cases.

That is how slurs tend to be used: as a tool to dehumanize something we wish to grant no moral value to.

My hot take is that anyone intentionally being mean to an AI is not a psychologically stable person and similar behaviour can most likely be observed in other parts of their life as well.
This is why “Westworld” would never work. Whether the robots there actually feel anything is beside the point. We’d simply view the people who go there to take pleasure in abusing these human-like machines as the sadistic psychopaths that they are.

The term is fine - people just don’t know the actual definition of it.
AI is a broad, unspecific term. It’s like the term “plants” - it covers everything from grass to giant redwoods but we have more specific terms for the subcategories for a reason. If we just refer to all life that photosynthesizes as plants then nobody knows which plant you’re talking about. Nowadays when someone speaks of AI it’s relatively safe to assume that they’re talking about one of the multimodal frontier models (that are not only LLMs) but it’s sloppy, imprecise use of language and it will lead to people talking past each other.
In the classical sense AI refers to a system capable of performing any cognitive task typically attributed to a human. Under this definition, even an Atari chess engine is an AI. However nowadays the meaning has shifted a little and the term typically refers to a system that has been trained with a bunch of data.

The “break” from sitting in my case means working

And Plato argued that writing things down is bad because then we don’t need to remember anything.

Agreed. Even without internet connection, there still remains a ton of other stuff I don’t like about modern cars. I find them quite frustrating to drive honestly.
I’m perfectly happy with my -07 Nissan pickup and willing to drive it the next 20 years too if I have to. Just gotta try and stay ahead of all the rust.
I don’t use ChatGPT anymore as I’ve switched to another model but back when I did this wasn’t something they were secretly doing. It’s a feature. You can read the memories it has saved, delete the ones you don’t want it to store and IIRC it can also be turned off.
