I just have a different partition for /home. For snapshots, you could set a partition up as btrfs and use btrfs snapshots
Is there a particular reason you can’t use apt here?
It’s always preferable to stick with repo packages unless absolutely necessary, because performing a manual install could place your system into an unsupported state or prevent apt from updating it later, which can lead to issues especially if that package is something core like bash.
The thing is, MS made a command line package manager that allows users to submit configs for new packages via GitHub. But they haven’t made a UI for it and don’t tell anyone that it exists. You have to go out of your way to find out about it, which 99% of users are not going to do.
I use it when I set up new Windows VMs and it’s a lot easier than manually navigating to websites for software installers.
The relative lack of content on Lemmy, for me, has been a boon. I go through New, then Top 6 Hours, then Top 12 Hours, then I need to find something else to do. When I was on Reddit, I found myself bouncing between Reddit and YouTube for entertainment. With Lemmy not having boundless amounts of crap to scroll through and no algorithm, my tech usage is far more varied.

I spent 3 days in a hotel room this week, and while I did bring my Steam Deck and dock with me for entertainment, I got there to find that the TV had no HDMI ports. I was stuck with basic cable and the only saving grace being Showtime, which wasn’t at extra cost and doesn’t have ads.
But when both Showtime channels had stuff I was less than indifferent to watching, the advertisements on any of the other channels were horrible. The shows felt like they were 1:1 in terms of content to ads.
Don’t get me started on the radio, either. I used to love listening to the radio, but now all they play is the same set of a couple dozen songs, with 5 minutes of ads that play every 3 or so songs. Also, no rock station in my area plays anything newer than ~15 years old, tops. They’re all still playing the same music that I listened to on those stations when I was a teen, and I’m a little over 30.
I remember hearing about the potential of Web 2.0 in the 00s and thought it sounded like it was going to be really cool.
Now I just want the old web back. Isolated forums had a sense of community that, even on Lemmy, isn’t present in the same way.
Alma and Rocky aren’t really distros intended for casual use, they’re designed mainly with servers in mind. If you want an RHEL-based experience designed for a desktop, go with Fedora.
I used CentOS for my servers during CentOS6/7, but since they moved to Stream I run my servers on Debian or Ubuntu instead.
With any luck it’ll provide the authentic sort of answers developers have come to expect from a quality site like stack overflow. Like telling you to read the documentation, use the search feature, marked as duplicate, why you’re even using that programming language for this, or shilling it’s new JavaScript framework that came out last week. All the while reminding you that it’s superior and really can’t be bothered with your stupid question.
So basically, they’re not even using it to stop kids from buying games, just as verification when a kid signs up for a service. It’s a good thing a kid would never just change their age and say they’re 50 or something, and are always completely honest about their ages.
Also, a large company crying because nobody trusts them not to sell every piece of information they receive brings me joy inside.

I think humans are too specifically hardwired for actual human interaction for it to work. Like, it’s so specific that even online communication with real humans doesn’t fill the void. I can talk to friends on Discord for ages, but it’s not the same as meeting up and going to do something.
I really don’t think an AI, even a convincing one, is going to make a large dent on loneliness in the majority of cases.
Usually you won’t be updating the firmware because it’s baked into the Linux kernel.

I’m not worried about it. The “Legal” page of my Lemmy instance even spells out that anything posted on it is likely permanent.
I’m just pointing out that the issue being fixed doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t still a concern to someone.
Some AI generated images can require a lot of tweaking to get a final result. For example, someone might have a workflow that involves generating several images, then picking one as a base. They then take that base, and use img2img to rework certain parts to suit a vision before applying a set of post-processing effects in a traditional editor.
Or, they generate an image and use it as a base for some sort of more traditional art, or use AI generated elements in a work that is otherwise drawn traditionally.
There’s a lot of grey where I think just dismissing any creative vision is doing disrespect to the person that wanted to make something out of that vision, and put in a good amount of work outside just proompting and taking the first image that looked okay.
