Ima be honest here. The last messaging service I used was Facebook back in 2012 prior to discord. And prior to Facebook was MSN messenger lol I really just don’t know what’s available. I’ll have to go do some reading

This is going to be such a pain in the ass. They already have had issues with security. This is such a massive can of worms

I suppose the next question is where will everyone go? If they wanted to keep kids safe this ain’t it because they’ll go somewhere else anyways. So it’s a lose/lose for everyone.
Possibly a win for companies if they want to harvest data/sell it.

I popped that sucker on 3x speed with captions, and it was a great watch

I’ll believe it when I see it lol.

Lol of course that’s a thing. Welp so much for my big brain ideas. As usual its already a thing haha

Okay at first I was wondering “who the hell would want to do this?” But then I thought maybe its like…if you need a TV for an event? Being able to rent out a large TV might be helpful? But like thats so absolutely niche.
But its the only way I could ever see it make sense. If you needed a very large flat screen only for a few days or something you could rent it instead of paying a few thousand.

Microslop needs to figure their shit out. I think 11 has been worse than any previous “bad” windows version. I’ve never had such an unreliable experience with an OS before.
I would swap, but I’m forced/still have reason to use it for various programs/work.

Yeah, it’s not great. I feel terrible for the guy because he lives on his own and has a mortgage to pay. I just hope he can get back on his feet sooner rather than later.

My job just let us know that they are going to invest about $170,000 into AI subscriptions per year. A few days later, they fired an artist they had hired for over a decade. A chunk of us are pretty upset but the rest don’t seem to care. They’re too busy playing with Ai making it generate “funny” pictures.

If you want people to update, you have to push out tested solid updates. Otherwise, the risk outweighs any potential benefit. Watching the windows 11 updates has been so weird

I think the biggest thing is that people don’t seem to understand how AI works. If they understood it’s just predictive text and not like…actual intelligence, I think it would solve a lot of issues.
Part of this, though, is how AI companies keep pushing to personify their AI and keep making them sound better than they actually are. It makes people think its this magical thing

Yeah thats true! I hope that the world shifts towards that rather than what most people have been doing.

The only way I would be comfortable with Ai is if I could craft it myself, run it locally, and prevent it from feeding bullshit results, was energy efficient, could prevent it from phoning home, wasn’t built off of stolen data and also didn’t give profit to big companies

First I think it depends on what we are considering kids. I was online from age 8 but didn’t get into online games or communities until about 10. But in the case of the law, they’re often saying anything below 15, 16 or 18 etc. It depends on the country/jurisdiction.
There are lots of places kids can find community. When i was a kid I was playing on neopets, club penguin, old school runescape, guild wars. I made friends with people from all over the place. One of my best friends in my youth is from across the continent, and we have been friends for 20 years now.
I think the bottom line is parents should parent. When I was a kid the PC was in the main room. My parents spoke to me frequently about staying safe online and asked me about what I was doing on the PC. They made sure I was only accessing kid appropriate sites and that I wasn’t getting myself into trouble.
Could I have gotten in trouble? Yeah possibly. I also could have gotten kidnapped at the local park

I wish union work was more common place. It seems where I live unions are mostly for blue collar work and less common than I would hope to see.

I just got a new pc back in February and I’m kicking myself for not buying more storage and ram

Whenever this comes up, it feels like a play to harvest people’s data and / or to slip additional laws into place under the guise of “protect the children”.
On one hand I don’t think it’s terrible to try to guide kids more. I think parents should be doing more parenting tbh. If a parent wants to put parental locks in place, they can. Even blocking specific sites from being accessed entirely. I think the bigger issue is people don’t understand how to use computers so they think there’s nothing they can do lol.
On the other I think it runs the risk of preventing kids from accessing information online, finding safe spaces online, and isolating kids more than they already can be. It also limits things like teaching kids about technology and how to use it safely.
They say they’ll have some sort of AI analyzing what you say. That seems pretty invasive
