Isn’t there a song I’m vaguely recalling from Sunday school about that? “Red and yellow, black, and off-white, all are zeroed in his sights. Drop expensive bombs on all the little children in the world.” Did I remember that correctly?

I canceled my Netflix when they did the account sharing shenanigans, and filled out the exit survey explaining why. I had only kept my Netflix because my parents watched it, then they made it so hard to add a family member addon account I said fuck it and canceled everything.

My parents signed up for their own account, so Netflix didn’t lose total count, but they lost the extra subscriber that was the whole point. I know I am an edge case in not just complaining while taking it, but there is always hope.

Very true, not a user friendly experience at all. My only experience with setting up automatic mounting was looking into mounting my “user drive” (separate SSD that I redirect all Windows stock folder structure like Documents or Downloads to) into at the time Manjaro, and abandoning the idea after reading about NTFS write concerns and experiencing chkdsk actions in Windows every time I even just mounted it. All my ext4 or btrfs drives were created during Linux installation and mapped automatically.

Admittedly in CachyOS now I have yet to generate a chkdsk after mounting, browsing or copying data out of my NTFS user drive, so that may have been a Manjaro thing (along with breaking either itself or the bootloader ever single update). Still not risking the drive by auto mounting it or writing to it.

While I do agree with you on principle, keep in mind that while NTFS is technically supported in Linux there can still be issues. Reading is fine, but write can still be suspect. Someone a lot more experienced than I can correct this if I’m wrong, but it is not recommended to share a drive actively between Windows and Linux due to NTFS quirks.

I mount my Windows NTFS data disk as needed in CachyOS, and will build the NAS I keep putting off for active file sharing as I spend more time on the Linux partition.

But the other options are Junos, whatever unholy abomination Dell is doing now, or HPE Aruba.

My issue has been with #1 on your cheat sheet. My first modern (post 2014) migration attempt was with Manjaro, but every time I would install updates it would break secure boot. Then 2 weeks ago it just flat out killed grub.

I decided to take the advice of many people on the Linux side of Lemmy and nuked Manjaro in favor of CachyOS. I like it quite a bit more than Manjaro, and limine kicks grub’s ass, but I keep running into more limitations with the package manager. I look for windows software alternatives, find they should be available on the AUR, but then have problems getting an installation.

There is a lack of good documentation for using AUR on Cachy, and things aren’t intuitive for a long time Windows power user. That doesn’t even get into flat pack or AppImage. It’s a very steep learning curve.

What exactly is the problem with Manjaro? I ended up trying it, but my switch to Linux from Windows 11 has been hampered by Battlefield 6 and a few other games. Did I make the wrong choice for Linux distro?

The only reason I haven’t switched to Manjaro permanently is because mods for the Warhammer tides games is much more tedious and I play Battlefield 6. The rootkit anti cheat software that many of the new multiplayer games use suck, but I do still want to play some of those games.

It doesn’t come across as you appreciating value in artistic expression and other intangibles when you say “suck it up and get a real job”. That may not have been your intention, but it can definitely be read that way. I think that is the “boomer” people have commented on.

I don’t think there are really that many people who think social media creators or better than farmers or essential services personnel, and those that do are completely out of touch, but there are plenty of people who see alternative media creators as less than any other job. I personally think A-list actors, celebrities and sports professionals are no better than grocery store worker or warehouse person, but I won’t deny they work just as hard in different ways.

By that metric do authors or poets or actors create a physical product? Do computer programers? Since the death of physical media, books and art are now far more frequently digital than paper or canvas. Applications and software is 100% digital. Newspapers are dead, so journalists don’t create a physical product. Is your argument that only physical labor producing physical things is “real” work?

That makes the conservative talking point of anchor babies a real thing. Make your way onto US soil to give birth by any means necessary, and suddenly you are granted a pathway to citizenship and a guaranteed legal status from day one?

That kind of massive shortcut of the immigration system would break the system. Birth tourism would skyrocket along with all other forms of illegal immigration. There is a reason no country on earth allows that.

Do you not think that doing so would be a huge incentive driving illegal border crossings or visa overstays to take such a shortcut? Do you think that creating a parallel alternative immigration pathway such as that is a good thing?

I certainly disagree with how the trump administration is operating, and fuck anyone who says non-citizens don’t have a right to a day in court, but how can carving out loopholes and shortcuts be good for the long term health of the system? Unless crippling the system to the point of implosion to cause a reform is the goal, but I find that to be too close to the conservatives crippling other public sector programs to cause private sector reform to profit off it.

This is a bit of a catch 22, the child wasn’t deported her parents were. I don’t even doubt that ICE was lazy and didn’t make sure the mother knew what was happening and every option available to their child. This is a shit show how Trump is handling mass deportation instead of expanding the immigration courts to process the backlogs and get everyone their constitutionally protected day in court. ICE has been done a disservice by Trump and deserves a lot of the shit the department is getting.

The child is a US citizen, 100%, but that doesn’t offer protection from prosecution to their parents. A 2 year old who’s US citizen parent or parents commit a crime will have their parent/parents taken away when put in jail, and then be given into the custody of a relative or taken into foster care. This is not unique to immigration.

Would you rather the child have been unilaterally taken from their mother and placed into US foster care when no family was identified that could take them in the US? Then we are separating children from their families, which is fucked up.

There historically have been limited stays of deportation available for illegal immigrant parents of US citizen children, but this administration is obviously being extremely tough on those. If you want to give automatic deportation immunity to anyone who has a child on US soil until those children are legally adults, you turn “anchor babies” from being basically a myth into an actual reality.

There is no perfect solution for any of this.

At the very least back up your Audible library in a DRM free format with something like Libation.

I am still using Audible because their web player works in my restricted office, and the authors get a couple of pennies from dragon, but have my library safely exported to ensure continued access and prevent fuckery like this.
