I love this idea. It raises some issues to think about, too. Like, who “owns” that data? Would Reddit file a lawsuit against the Lemmy instance arguing that the data belongs to Reddit? Does the data belong to the users who posted? What TOS do we agree to when signing up for a Reddit account? Are we giving them ownership of all content we post?
Create a read only lemmy instance populated with the data from the Reddit data dump. Make sure Google indexes it. Comply with DMCA requests made by users who want their content removed.
I check at least once a day. HN is great for tech news. In fact, it might not be a bad idea to stream HN topics into posts in a Lemmy community to discuss here.
The comments at HN are generally high quality but seem heavily moderated.
Yes but give it a few years for the price to come down, and for kinks in the technology to be worked out. The price would need to come down significantly though. They can’t compete with Meta at the price point they are at.
For me it was Slashdot->Hacker News, And then in parallel Reddit->Lemmy
Brave. It’s interesting getting completely different results than from any of the big players. And the results from Brave are often better.
If you are completely new, I would recommend a Synology. Very easy to use.
I don’t know how much it matters though? If I try it on my Windows XP machine I’ll still be stuck with the old limit right?
