I was PMing a student project for NASA and the sheer number of tabs and files I had open on my PC killed Windows.

I had a week until the deadline and I’m in a situation where things may or may not save, basic functionality was questionable and I had literally thousands of pages information to format and get out.

Once I turned it in I installed Linux and never looked back.

I think you might have something wrong with your install. I do some heavy simulations (mostly Thermo and structural stress tests) with old hardware and haven’t had to restart ever.

I’m baffled as to how you can have so many problems.

I swapped to Linux in the last month. But honestly being able to use my phone as a backup made me not worry about needing a computer right then.

I think it’s both an issue if hardware support and being the little guy.

If Linux wants to be bigger it needs to change it’s selling point. People have been conditioned to think of free software as bloated ad-fests by their phones. My wife was asking how I liked Linux and I could only describe apps as the early Android app store where everything was free and generally great.

Calling out Windows for privacy issues doesn’t have too much sway. Mostly because the damage is done, people have posted on Facebook and agreed to every tracker, what’s one more? Calling out Windows for being slower, showing you ads all the time and taking away features might have more traction.

I just swapped to Linux, and it’s harder to use than windows, sort of.

I still can’t get one headphone jack to work on my case and my wifi printer/scanner can’t be controlled on the printer anymore. Troubleshooting has two modes, a step by step instructions set that either works or doesn’t, or highly technical stuff that is above my expertise.

I don’t care what rights they want to curtail, if they say they’ll lower my taxes by a nickel I’ll vote for them!

All I want is for some objective statements about different distros. Like tell me what distro is a full time job to maintain. Tell me what distro is sending me to the command line all of the time. Give me some basic functionality benchmarks (search time, opening a browser and boot time) on a low, mid and high end computer.

The issue is new users.

If you have a vague understanding that Linux has distros and to switch to Linux, you’ll likely Google “best Linux distro.” Results that say “they all are good for different reasons” are unhelpful. Having sort through 50 options isn’t helpful.

New users want to know what to install. This means that some distros get hyped up as the best, and then people point out the cracks.

Until there is a clear and objective list of distros with pros and cons labeled the cycle will continue.

If you think it’s crazy your school uses three year old programs wait until you find out how many businesses are running XP!

Valve is such a weird company.

They became where nearly every PC game is sold by using some of the greatest games of all time as advertising. The orange box has to be the biggest return on a loss leader ever.

I’m thinking about making the switch soon, can you tell me why you went pop_OS instead of mint?

I’m getting overwhelmed with options and just want to know why you went with one over the other
