There are a LOT of right-wing agents on reddit and lemmy both posing as leftists. Their goal is to get American leftists to demand perfection or nothing, resulting in them spending their efforts trying to get others to vote third party instead of voting Democratic, which is the only way to mitigate the damage being done right now.

We can vote for leftists in the primaries, but we have to vote Dem in the general election, even if the candidates aren’t our first choice.

I’m waiting to hear how it is. Dan Houser and a lot of the other team members who lead the previous GTA games and RDR gave left Rockstar, so I don’t have the confidence I had going into GTAIV and V and RDR2.

It’s about false advertising. They advertise it as being ad-free, and then say in the TOS that there are, in fact, still ads.

TOS can clarify details of a service and set limitations and boundaries, but they do not justify deceitful advertising.

The end result will likely be a settlement with YouTube adding an asterisk on the ad itself that clarifies that users will still see advertisements inserted by the creators.

This is an issue I’m seeing more and more of. People are demanding that others be perfect at all times. We all fuck up and make mistakes. If we write off everyone we’ve ever disagreed with as irredeemably bad, then we’re telling people there’s no point in growing and changing.

When I was a kid in the early 90s in Texas, I thought homosexuality was immoral. I was wrong and I’ve spent the last 30 years preaching for inclusion and tolerance. And that’s the story for most people my age. In the 90s, a Democratic President banned openly gay people from being in the military.

If we want to change society, we have to invite others to our side with open arms, not condemn them.

I have a degree in GIS and use QGIS almost every day. Of course I know it’s better for many things than Google Earth (though GE is still a better viewer). But even then - it’s only better if you take the time to learn to use it.

I can teach someone to drag a kml into GE in seconds. I can’t teach them QGIS.

I use QGIS for a living. Adding layers and image services is easy for me, but not to someone who doesn’t even know what GIS is. I couldn’t teach someone how to use it in seconds like I can GE, which consists of “Open Google Earth, and click and drag the file into the window”.

And with GE, you don’t have to license the satellite imagery or teach someone how to add web-based tile services to GQIS.

They can also use the draw tool in GE and right-click the drawing and export a file I can open in QGIS or ESRI without them having to know anything about projections or datums.

They’re actually killing the PC version next year, which is actually a problem.

It’s the goto solution for sharing GIS layers for free using a simple platform. Anybody can download Google Earth Pro for free, and we can export KML/KMZ files from ESRI or QGIS that will be viewable over fairly recent satellite imagery without having to pay thousands for software and/or imagery licensing.

I enjoy the backpack detection mode they have on laptops to make sure it turns on, overheats, and drains the battery anytime you take it somewhere you’ll want to use it unplugged.

Bibles. There are so many fucking bibles. When I worked for a church we probably had 20 people a year buy a while new set of new bibles for the church. Like - we already had like 3,000 bibles with a weekly attendance of about 500. We didn’t need new bibles, but people just kept giving them to us.

It’s the most-printed book of all time, and they just don’t stop making them. It’s insane.

They don’t, which is why they can’t prohibit this satellite. It meets all their requirements regarding radio interference.

The Satellite should absolutely be stopped, but the FCC isn’t the agency to do it.

Cities have to report on their budgets, and spending more taxpayer money replacing cameras the public doesn’t want that are very much in the public eye is something many City Councils won’t want to continue.

For cities where Council is split on the issue, this kind of expense is the kind of thing that may push that last vote over the threshold to cancel the contract.

Flock still makes its money, but their contracts aren’t renewed and the cameras are covered up, so it’s a win overall.

My city finally got a court order against a billionaire for unpermitted building that allows us to bulldoze his house. Just took 7 years in court to get the ruling…

And instead of bulldozing the house, we were able to use the court order to strongarm them into fixing their site so it no longer damages the environment, their neighbors, or city infrastructure.

The upside for the city there (aside from having to bid out and manage a major project in-house) is that we get a lot more tax revenue from a house that is brought into compliance than a scarred, demolished site.

If you write enough laws in a manner that makes it easy to violate them accidentally, then anyone can be prosecuted at any time and civil liberties can be removed via technicalities.

There’s scraping data, which should be considered stealing, and then there’s asking people to steal company data as part of an interview process.

This is actual industrial espionage. If true, it could be a big deal.

The US has a weird mix of big emplty spaces, really fucking expensive existing underground utilities and roadways, and private property (easements ain’t free) that makes new underground utilities stupidly expensive to run.

You have to buy big easements, negotiate utility contracts with local and state governments (to use the public right-of-way), dodge existing infrastructure while repairing what you break, and lay a fuckton of cable.

I work on the municipal side, and despite Google Fiber having a utility agreement with us for years they still have yet to lay a single foot of underground fiber because we won’t allow them to cut across roads that we just replaced in the last year, require their microtrenches to follow engineering standards, and they need to show existing underground water, gas, wastewater, and electrical services on their plans because they’re famous for just running a trench and making it the water district’s problem when they cut 7 public lines in an hour.

They probably have a stronger claim and higher-ceiling on their portion of any judgment suing individually.
