I’ve seen reports that the B580 may have lower performance with non-newest CPUs (possibly related to how ReBar being off can lower performance). Some of the options I see for that are also PCIe x8 as well.
I’m also on Linux, and from what I’ve heard it’s a bit behind there compared to the already expected beta-test. I mean, unless things (on either platform) have improved in the last 5 months.
That’s the thing, that’s way above my price range.
I’m still happy* with my other parts that I got on sale in 2019 (Ryzen 2700, 16GiB RAM). Also crazy to me that an entry-level GPU had 4GiB VRAM in 2016 and it still hasn’t moved much beyond that. I guess the market never fully recovered from crypto. Or maybe I just really threaded the needle when it comes to value.
* I don’t really play high-end/newer games though, so even with the GPU some of the issue is just that I worry that the fans are eventually going to die. So it’s that and the nice-to-have of something that could maybe fit in a backpack.
It’ll probably be a while. And it might even be some other tech like ARM, or maybe some new luggable PC even if that happens to just be some second-hand portable with no battery.
It (along with AMD’s habit of not having the full x16 capability, general gpu prices) does not inspire confidence that I’m ever upgrading away from my 1050Ti any time soon.
I may instead have more luck with an APU in a minipc (when the spec and price eventually makes sense).

Difficult to think of projects that I want to do that are also viable for me now. I settled on Minesweeper (/a dragonsweeper-like) though I lost momentum as I got a bit hung up on how to implement it in a way that’d allow dynamic map sizes. I suppose I should just make it as simple as I can and then differentiate it later.
Mostly been ignoring it though, instead making efforts to organize my room. Any personal growth is good, right?
I would also like an excuse to make some polygonal art (2D or 3D) but I don’t have many ideas there either, and many ideas of which would probably be an insignificant amount of actual coding compared to animation.
I guess I would boil it down to: I’m not using Linux on a touchscreen and am unlikely to any time soon. I’m not even sure if/when I’ll ever go beyond 1080p (and a small screen at that) because cost.
I don’t want a dock or full-screen apps menu. I don’t want to fix those (or missing features) using extensions. I do want to customize things*, but otherwise I don’t need my desktop to look new or exciting.
* I even made my own hyper-minimal XFWM window theme (which is honestly unneeded for maximized applications due to my XFCE settings anyway, but it does allow me to have a rolled-up music player always visible like an old-internet music widget).
just introduce new users to GNOME, that’s perfectly intuitive and even looks great!
Gnome 2 sure, modern not so much. I mean when useful features are cut from the GUI it just means it’s harder to actually do things. Like removing “open in terminal” made non-GUI stuff more difficult (esp. w/complicated directory).
I’d say XFCE or Cinnamon or anything else like those are better.

EDIT: Not quite the Streisand Effect considering I already knew about it, but still an unintended source of pressure. Like someone stockpiling before a ban of something, even if they weren’t too avid about it before. I’ve had a similar thought when it comes to taking down free streaming sites.
Though this seems to have traded compute for data, so I don’t have the VRAM for it… even running through RAM, I don’t feel like downloading a lesser version with my slow-ish internet.
I am only interested in a niche compiled-to-<C/C++/JS> language due to the capability/speed while keeping readability. With that in mind, I wonder if Python’s JIT and no-GIL update will slow or reverse the stated trend (assuming it’s true at all).
Though it’s still an issue with bindings for something I can already use with my preferred lang, so is one reason why I haven’t tried it.
Never had one but have family who has their VR headsets and aren’t really using them, borderline useless if you aren’t willing to use their ecosystem. They were having some trouble with their accounts (probably related to account migrations) and seemed too unsettled by the paper wall of text about being part of an organization to unlock dev mode.
I mostly do untextured low-poly stuff so I’ll think I’ll leave that one to the brofessionals. It doesn’t seem like a good starting point.

Even if so, PCIe 5.0 x8 connection so it’s probably less useful for older systems with PCIe 3 (or even PCIe 4) which many on a budget will want to keep using.
Likely will have the issue (that B580 has) with older/weaker CPUs as well though that might be more of a gaming thing not sure about workstation use… I mean if it is a bandwidth issue with the architecture itself (with a CPU not being able to saturate the data for whatever reason) maybe.
