Like set up a single server kubernetes distribution like microk8s or minikube on the server with metalLB and ingress already preconfigured on the server and router. You could also give instructions on how to install a GUI like Lens and how to use it to deploy a few things. Probably using workstation applications would be better than a web UI like Portainer to keep the server lighter, but either might work.

It’s also why tablets never really took off. Sure a lot of people use them, but mostly as a big screen phone in portrait orientation. But they could be so much more if designers actually designed apps to adapt to changing sizes. Even something simple like displaying two screens of a normal phone app side by side in landscape mode rather than having to switch back and forth. But ultimately, cost makes developing for multiple screen sizes a “low priority feature”, and those kinds of things never get funding. Instead they would rather put a feature that looks cool to investors and executives the product managers are trying to get to fund the project and on marketing materials to get sales people on-board, but is ultimately useless to the end user. Which comes back to the main problem in late-capitalism. The end user is no longer the customer, the corporate overlords and their investors are.

They removed the requirement for a DUNS for individual developers, so I switched my account to individual from my previous LLC. My LLC has been inactive for a long time and I didn’t feel like changing my address with the IRS and all that. But all of my apps are free.

But the real issue is they keep making it more difficult to keep the app active. There are so many documentation requirements that I just didn’t have time for, so my apps which are really old got removed over one of those new requirements a while back. I fixed a few like making it an adults only app because it has a recipe for mulled wine. But it just wasn’t worth all the other stuff and I haven’t wanted to recompile in the newer SDK. If I could do it without making any changes to the code it would be fine, but there’s been too many changes. One of these days I’ll update it, but I’m one of the few people who even use my apps, so it’s not a big deal.

But OpenAI not being allowed to use the content for free means they are being prevented from making a profit, whereas the Internet Archive is giving away the stuff for free and taking away the right of the authors to profit. /s

Problem is there’s no marketing money to make the better platforms more widely known because there’s not as much monetization of the users to fund it.

Yeah, you definitely should run it on a separate machine. A home NAS itself probably shouldn’t be doing anything beyond serving files and basic maintenance. Using them for too much will reduce their ability to serve data fast enough. Just be sure the media server and NAS have appropriate network cards, preferably gigabit, though even 100Mbit probably is enough for most of your network isn’t already too busy, and ideally are connected to the same switch (again preferably gigabit) with good quality network cables.

The whole reason the product is so expensive is the online services. And if the first person paid the price for that, then no one should be required to pay for just changing hands. Problem is that it was priced with the idea in mind that most people who bought the product would quit using it after a short time and that concept was the basis of their profit. It’s a bad, short term strategy designed to generate short term profit at the expense of long term profit which only benefits investors. And this leads to the main problem with the current system. The end-user is no longer considered the customer, investors are.

And anyone who believes that should be fired, because they don’t understand the technology at all or what is involved in programming for that matter. At the very least it should make everyone question the company if its leadership doesn’t understand their own product.

Tech is just the most visible industry right now. Look at any other major corporations and you’ll find the same.

But Trump believes that all executive branch employees are directly reportable to him and he forced out and refused to replace many employees. Also, there is Schedule F. Trump didn’t have enough time to fully implement it the first time. This removed employees are n “confidential, policy-determining, policy-making or policy-advocating” positions from the General Schedule. Meaning they were political appointees going forward. Biden rescinded it immediately so it never got used, but it will be reimplemented.

With that, he has the power to implement almost anything without oversight. When he implements his tariffs for example, and other countries retaliate with their own, the value of American goods will plummet since they’ll be way more expensive. This will reduce trade and thus the value of the currency. And no amount of tweaks to interest rates will stop that.

Sure he can’t print money, but the reliability ratings of US debt are already declining due to the fights over the debt ceiling, and Trump supports that fight and doesn’t believe that the US should have to pay those debts because of the investments we’ve made. Simply blocking those payments could tank the currency. There are tons of ways if there’s no legal consequences and most employees are replaced with his loyalists.

A politician should not be allowed to own something they have the explicit power to artificially inflate the value of. For the president, that’s all businesses.

As for currency, again, the president has the ability to crash the value of the American currency and drive people to his currency in order to artificially inflate it. Sacrificing an entire global economy for personal gain should not be possible.

But not only is it possible, now with the recent Supreme Court ruling, he’d be immune to prosecution for doing it, so why wouldn’t he do it?

These aren’t meant for complex things or even to install a full operating system kernel on or for moving data files. These are more for controlling electronics directly. Something you’d find inside a very specialized device like maybe controlling the speed of an air filter fan based on information from a few environmental sensors.

I’ve been using LibreWolf on Desktop and Mull on Android. Basically more securely configured versions of Firefox with the proprietary telemetry and some other stuff removed. Takes some tweaking to get certain websites to work that need more access than they should or use Certificate Authorities that don’t have working OSCP servers.

AMD: the labeling on our processors is wrong and that’s a serious issue that requires a recall.

Intel: our processors are frying themselves, we have a software fix in the works, but there’s no way to guarantee preventing it in the mean time and no matter how long you’ve had the processor before it stops working properly or just flat out dies, we aren’t going to recall, replace, repair, or otherwise compensate you for the crappy expensive product we sold you.

I mean it’s sad when an issue that would likely lead to confusion and scamming people, but otherwise just a visual issue is more important to one company than a serious defect is to another, and that it’s such a “feel-good” thing to see the former when it should be a major problem that their QE didn’t catch that before shipping a major product.

Use Drive or if it’s more than 15GB or whatever the max is these days. Pay for storage for one month for a couple of dollars on one of the supported platforms and download from there.

The bloat isn’t for workers, otherwise there’d be enough people to go reboot the machines and fix the issue manually in a reasonable amount of time. It’s only for executives, managers, and contracts with kickbacks. In fact usually they buy software because it promises to cut the need for people and becomes an excuse for laying off or eliminating new hire positions.

It’s reasonably priced. I was in the same boat with the Google domains shutdown. As long as you aren’t a heavy user, it has lots of cool features. But if you get their attention they’ve been known to fleece the crap out of small businesses that were using their free services. Most of my stuff is self hosted applications to move myself off of Google services, so my traffic is minimal.

Not that crazy. Back then they were a luxury item and competition could easily spring up if they lost control of the market. Now they’re a necessity, competition is scarce, and they have deals with most major manufacturers to keep them in businesses even with faulty products. It’s standard late-capitalism consolidation at work.
