its interesting but it tells us what we already know about subjects with material that is incomplete.

Since WSL2 and terminal preview I have spent more time doing “nix things” than windows things anyway, I even do a lot of windows file management through ubuntu since the Linux tools are more expressive.
Much of my day is web browser, cli and VSCode. The desktops are capable, at this point its more about getting used to a different set of keyboard shortcuts, my next build out will be a linux system for sure.

pretty much, though my understanding is they ended up making thier own “wine” that leverages hyper-v. Seems like they are still banking on thier own hypervisor. Can’t say I blame them. no way MS hands thier ops to VMWare.
EDIT: Honestly, I would expect NT4/Server2000 based windows to be sunset within a decade in place of a linux kernel version that has a window manager developed in microsoft’s signature style. A large number of newer UWP apps will port relatively easily if already written on .NET core and microsoft has indicated they are starting to think more like apple when it comes to some levels of compatibility.

tbh, windows user since the 90s, tried *nix desktops since the early 00s every few years. Used to have a thing where I would force myself to use it for 6 months and it would fail again and again.
In the last year, ive been using ubuntu (which i know isint the best desktop to use even) as a dev system on some of my work. Unlike in the past I am no longer finding an unreasonable delta between the user expectations in linux vs windows systems. I need to drop to a cli for both with ~ the same propensity once I do anything advanced. Not having a registry is a blessing I never thought I would be able to have in a rich visual system.
Long time .NET / Azure dev - moving to linux. After all, what do you think remote windows will run under-the-covers?

and I want to move fully off of windows, what a coincidence.

I just picked up ansible and realized my home-grown list of bash scripts and python was doing a lot of the same things. Now im debating just going into making my own ansible.

they aren’t powerless, they just leave.

at this point there is no “walking it back” for many unless spez and a number of employees are removed and replaced. Even then, i dont think I can ever trust the org. At the end of the day thier objectives re:IPO put thier goals in direct contravention of what reddit is or was.
The site simply is no longer able to function as it was, and there is really no way to fix that. They may have simply handed thier business to meta without getting meta to buy them out.

Thats been the case time and again, how many disruptions from the tech bros came to industries that had been stagnant or moving at a snails pace when it came to adopting new technology (esp to lock into more expensive legacy systems).
Most of those industries disrupted could have been secured by the players in those markets instead the allowed a disruptor to appear unchallenged.
Remember the market is not as rational as some might think, you start filling gaps and people often won’t ask about the fallout and many of these services did have people warning against these things.
We are for the most part, in a nation that lets you do whatever you want until the effects have hit people, this is even more a thing if you are a business. I don’t know an easy answer, in some of these cases, old gaurd needed a smack, in others a more controlled entry may have been better. As of now “controlled” is jut about the size of ones cash pile.
Cue the ethical corporations discussion…

ty for the clarification!

Processing of personal data for which the responsibility lies with the state
This part right here seems like a power reach, I would be concerned this bill is a small step toward a govt forcing everyone to run tracking software (to ensure your data’s safety) with threat of arrest if they don’t.

this is the way

oooooo
is this the beginning of the road? going through this farce is going to give govt what it needs to consider these attacks on the state.

facts, would not want to see it either as its more likely to make a mess but telecom has been srs business for years. at this point it can be argued some of this is about stability and national security. better to have everyone connected than not, companies making this harder are going to make themselves targets.

so, they are asking to be regulated?

really its just different trust root authorities presuming we are still talking pk distribution infra involved here. alice and bob can of course always trade keys in other ways. if its distributed you have to root trust with a ledger (trust area: key ceremony, consensus protocol) or a CA (trust area: the CA chain, every step is another element of trust)

its work to sift through the junk but its worth it, i refer to my communities all day while working already!

yes please, come to the fediverse!
tied of pulling AI news off twitter already

another case of a company thinking they owned the commons when in reality the commons owned them.
enjoying watching this phase of social media, someone get me some gasoline
aside from misinfo this is more of why they want to moderate some responses, someone is going to blow themselves up using a recipe it gives them
