I really disagree with your first sentence. A few of the icons are obvious, but most are extremely vague. I actually use a Mac every day at work and I can’t tell you what half of these icons are for (I guess I don’t use them). For example the rocket icon, the book (is it a reader or a dictionary or what?), Safari’s icon looks like a map app since it’s a compass.

I don’t know what the history/clock icon is for and the app store icon is just terrible, and has even fewer context clues in languages where the word “app” doesn’t start with a Latin A character.

Icons rely on all kinds of assumptions and cultural cues. They might as well be hieroglyphics to people who aren’t familiar with them, which is why they need to come with labels or tooltips.

Gnu, Firefox, and gcc are not terrible

Ubuntu resets my default audio every time I put it to sleep. I have no idea why, other distros didn’t do this. Sometimes it fails to detect the speakers on my laptop completely.

I’ve found Ubuntu to need a lot less effort than other distros so I’m not planning to ditch it yet, but even Ubuntu still has weird quirks like this.

Also, some apps fail to open in x11 for some reason so I have to switch to a Wayland session every now and then. And then switch back to x11 because other apps won’t open in Wayland.

Linux always has some weird usability issue no matter how many distros I’ve tried. It’s getting a lot better but it’s not there yet.

TDD is not appropriate for everything or everyone

Slowroll is experimental and it’s still a rolling release that tracks tumbleweed. It might be less maintenance, but not necessarily more stable in terms of bugs. I’ve seen some people report pretty major issues with it in the last couple months.

Leap is the version you want if stability is your priority. You can even get the tumbleweed nvidia driver if you have an Nvidia card and want the latest driver. The only os I’ve used that was more stable than leap was debian. But Leap is much more flexible than Debian.

Getting warm isn’t the same thing as catching fucking fire like my girlfriend’s Samsung did in October. They have had it happen consistently across multiple models now. Go ahead and keep shilling for them with your ridiculous whataboutisms though.

It’s Samsung whose phones catch fire constantly, not Google. I’m never buying a Samsung ever again. They cannot be trusted.

They also had to get sued by multiple states before they started offering refunds in the US. Valve doesn’t do anything that doesn’t make them money. They just have a longer term view towards profit than a publicly traded company. That’s what lemmy/reddit doesn’t understand.

A Debian blend like SpiralLinux might be better for less technical people. Debian is one of my favorite distros but it’s pretty bare bones and requires some configuration to become an everday usage desktop.

Valve is not worthy of your trust. Gabe won’t sell to MS because Valve is an absolute gold mine and it’s extremely unlikely even MS could make him an offer that actually makes more money for him in the long run.

Valve is not awesome at all. Ffs, they didn’t become a monopoly by accident. People need to stop worshipping this company just because they started packaging wine with their app.

This is the same company that literally started the trend of requiring storefronts and custom installers for their games with HL2… the exact same thing people whine about EA and Blizzard doing.

PC gaming will become a total shit show if Valve dies and they’ll be fully responsible for it.

I have to agree with the other person actually. The drag and drop thing is kind of weird. They ought to just automate it.

Other than that I think Mac is fairly easy to use, and more customizable than people realize.

I do wish they had better window management though. GNOME and Windows both make window snapping so much easier than Mac. And the support for third party hardware on Mac is pretty bad.
