I’m pretty sure you can live without the minimize button. I’ve used Gnome for 3 years and I’ve never felt the need to minimize a window. Even now after I switched to KDE Plasma a few days ago, I still don’t minimize windows.

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•Guys, what's the best Linux distro to install on my PC?English
1·4 months agoI’m using openSUSE Tumbleweed with Gnome as of now, but plan on switching to Fedora on my next laptop. I would continue using Tumbleweed if it were not for that every 5 system updates (
zypper dup) or so Konsole and some 20 other related k-packages gets automatically installed for some reason. This started happening like 1 year ago and the only solutions I were able to find were just to keep removing (zypper rm -u) it every time or just lock (zypper addlock) it.

1·6 months agoMy openSUSE works without issues on my ThinkPad, including sleep. Back when I used EndeavourOS on a 2015 MacBook Pro putting it to sleep caused various problems (don’t really remember what).

World News@lemmy.world•Anti-foreigner sentiments are on the rise as Japan faces a population crisisEnglish
2·8 months agoGlad to hear it’s not a taboo! I had been always under the impression that Ryukyu was some sort of taboo word that was never to be mentioned of. I had somehow connected it with the once-Chinese influence over the Ryukyu Islands and thought it would anger locals or something haha.

World News@lemmy.world•Anti-foreigner sentiments are on the rise as Japan faces a population crisisEnglish
25·8 months agoIt’s actually scary how quick they’re rising. I live in Japan, and I once heard them at a intersection nearby on a car giving a speech. I hated how they speak. They sounded like they were heavily appealing to the emotion and used a lot of sentence final particles like ne, in a tone that sounded half-aggressive and also… very conservative in a way. They were talking some shit about how Japanese people should come first and that we should “protect Japan”, as if there was some sort of foreign force trying to tear Japan down to pieces. What’s worse was that there were actually people cheering for them. I actually wanted to go downstairs to shout at them but I restrained myself from doing that. I still sort of regret not going there to shout at them.

2·8 months agoCool, so people there actually like the name Ryukyu? I used the word Ryukyu in a Japanese class one day but I got corrected by the teacher saying that Okinawa is the new name.
(I’m Taiwanese btw)

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•How I use virtual desktopsEnglish
1·10 months agonot sure if a virtual desktop is the same thing as workspaces in Gnome, but what I do is I only really open one window in one workspace. The first window I open since system startup goes into the first workspace, etc. Usually the first one is the browser (Librewolf).

World News@lemmy.world•Europe goes into daylight saving time despite controversyEnglish
467·1 year agoTo people thinking of enforcing UTC around the globe:
obligatory: https://qntm.org/abolish
Before I read this article, I also thought it would be a great idea to get rid of timezones entirely and just use UTC for everything. To quote from the link,
Abolishing time zones brings many benefits, I hope. It also:
- causes the question “What time is it there?” to be useless/unanswerable
- necessitates significant changes to the way in which normal people talk about time
- convolutes timetables, where present
- means “days” (of the week) are no longer the same as “days”
- complicates both secular and religious law
- is a staggering inconvenience for a minimum of five billion people
- makes it near-impossible to reason about time in other parts of the world
- does not mean everybody gets up at the same time, goes to work at the same time, or goes to bed at the same time
- is not simpler.
As long as humans live in more than one part of the world, solar time is always going to be subjective. Abolishing time zones only exacerbates this problem.

3·1 year agoI just pulled this out from my ass, but I would guess yes, they do. But you rinse your mouth after brushing your teeth so I would guess it’s not that bad? Since you’re (mostly) not ingesting the microplastic particles from the toothbrush. But again I’m going off of nothing.

8·1 year agoThat is nice, but I need the Google Play Services for push notifications on the messaging app that everyone in my country uses. It’s sad, I know. If it weren’t for that I wouldn’t log in to a Google account on my Android phone either.

8·1 year agoIMO, Windows without a Microsoft account misses out on the least features, when compared to macOS without an Apple ID, iOS without an Apple ID, or Android without a Google accout. Sad that Microsoft keeps making it more and more difficult to bypass logging into a Microsoft accout during installation. But I use Linux anyways (btw)

I was curious about what the Japanese side’s take on Trump’s remark would be, so I found this news report from a Japanese outlet:
https://youtu.be/gy-4-iySD-s
Try translating the comments by yourself. You’d find that most people are blaming the Japanese reporter who asked “why didn’t you notify us before attacking Iran.” They say that of course they wouldn’t tell us (Japanese) about a surprise attack beforehand and that this question is stupid and rude.
Personally though I think this remark is rude regardless of what questions were asked. Also I think that the question itself may be stupid but isn’t rude.
