Yes but it’s generally easier and less prone to issues to just open their PowerPoint (or really, Google sheets) on the podium since I’m already using it. I’m sure the admin uses adapters as their excuse not to update the hardware though… (even if they are still using Win 11 on decades old computers).
Shitposter while I tend to two babies. Maybe when I have my life back, I’ll help us get a few more niche communities back?

I just want to share that last semester, the Windows podium computer we used decided randomly to update during a student presentation. It did not help their nerves, but I did turn it into a chance to evangelize Linux.
And no, they can’t use their own laptop, the connections to the podium computer, and thus the projector, use VGA…
Maybe not my biggest pro, but I was able to customize my UI way more than I ever could on Windows. I made an FFIX theme for my wife and I might make an Earthbound theme for myself whenever I get around to figuring out how to make a customized window style.
Is the phone integration a iPhone thing? My KDE Connect app lets me text and share files pretty easily, plus a few other nifty features, but I use Android.

8·8 days agoAny Chinese people? Because I’ve got several Chinese friends and coworkers I could name but probably wouldn’t on live TV, lol.
I’ve got the same setup but I found the issue wasn’t the hardware but a driver conflict with my Nintendo Gameboy Printer. I was able to rollback and get it working fine.

Technology@lemmy.world•AI radio hosts demonstrate why AI can’t be trusted alone - Claude tried to incite a revolution, Gemini cheerfully detailed horrific tragedies, and poor Grok was just confused.English
2·20 days agoI bet there’s a way to literally have NPR mixed in every hour with the live broadcast version I hear on FM, maybe using their podcast link (NPR News Now). They seem to have an Apple music link, so maybe there’s a way to get it to play on the hour every time it’s updated.
I’d look into it but I don’t mind just listening to my local FM, lol. KCRW kinda already has my weird vibe of music.

Technology@lemmy.world•‘A’ Grades Are Suddenly Everywhere Since the Arrival of ChatGPTEnglish
126·25 days agoSure as hell ain’t my students; it’s been a steady decline since ChatGPT came out and I think I may have failed more students than ever over unfinished projects. You can’t GPT the semester long project, there’s a paper trail and data to collect can it becomes super clear who is AI brained now…
Edit: PS, grade inflation has been a thing for a few decades now, btw; the As aren’t the problem so much as the mush brain.
Oddly, not a single problem on my 2070 system but I think age helps Linux get stable. Older the hardware, the better open source works.
You know what, I double that sentiment. The Linux community definitely helped me make the switch too, even if not by DMs.
I still have issues with an Nvidia card computer I own, but all my other machines work just fine and I simply like it more. I’m sure my card will come around sooner or later anyway.

Hardware@lemmy.world•10 years old laptop - is it time to retire?English
8·2 months agoI was provided a laptop to “make work for running code” and the thing was barely functional with 8gb of RAM on Windows 11, full bloat with HP crap on it, using up 6gb of RAM at rest. I wiped it and put a low-usage desktop environment with Mint and it’s like a new life, using like 500mb of RAM. I dare say, his stock app be damned, it might be the only way given just how much more or the system was returned to other applications.
Perhaps there’s an alternative software he can use? Or at another person suggested, just retire it and get a cheap Windows system and keep the old laptop for yourself? All I know is Windows, even debloated, will use up at least a fourth of that systems hardware, if not twice that much.

Technology@lemmy.world•Manjaro Linux Team Goes on Strike, Threatens to Fork the ProjectEnglish
21·3 months agoIt’s indeed the time. I found Cachy was a good pivot, similar feel but seems to work better overall. Manjaro is still based on Arch after all, technically.
It’s quite simple; we’re trying to find our lost comrades. I had a magical moment when not one, but two people who joined my group on an MMO were using CachyOS. It’s like meeting your triplets separated at birth.
You only find out if you bring it up, lol.

Linux@lemmy.ml•How do you explain to your co-workers that you use Libre Office Writer and other Linux apps?
7·3 months agoI teach, so trying to adjust old ppts for lecture got a little weird because it turned the bulletpoints into mailboxes, and equation formulas are done completely differently so libre just makes them uneditable (a picture?).
When things got wonky in lecture though I managed just fine. My students are much worse, they open shit in non-MS apps all the time (.notes for takehome exams, or like, keynote, whatever) and fuck up formatting all the time, often without even realizing it. (I do provide PDF alternatives at least). Explaining I use libre really easy in that case, lol.

Yes, same; the real solution is Linux podium with an adapter in every room by default. But that’s not happening anytime soon, lol.
Technically it’s not the projector with the issue either, the podium is more or less a very fancy hub with a monitor built in. I feel like the adapter could just be built in if necessary, lol.
