Comp sci undergrad from a mid tier university graduated in 2012, didn’t need Windows at all. I mostly used an Ubuntu desktop, pocket sized mini laptop with bsd, and a red hat vdi the school provided during a research assistantship.

The school had labs in the library and comp sci building if you needed windows for something but it never came up. Group projects shared files on school provided web based tools or dropbox and used the same for class forums, sharing docs and assignments, etc. Some web stuff was broken for Firefox and had to use chrome, but never hit anything requiring IE (pre Edge).

Even if you’re not in a technical field you may want to explore some of the common tools they use like git for version control (like save/restore points in a video game), LaTeX/TeX for better typesetting than office, and off-site backups.

Just make everything public and transparent because nobody seems to know how to actually protect data.

Spend a week or two with each if you can, even if you don’t stick with any you’ll be able to tell what parts you did or didn’t prefer or found difficult or easy that might help make a more informed choice. You might prefer the language features or syntax of one, but the tool chain or frameworks of another.

I like adding a backup function to .profile that can take a file or list of files as an argument and make a copy with a date suffix on the file name, and same date additional backups just add a character like ~ at the end. It’s in version control, but if I’m testing a change it’s just faster to restore the file from a copy in the same place.

Not scary for the auto workers who want to work on them, build them, supply parts for them, etc or the families who want affordable EVs. More scary for the wealth class who didn’t reinvest enough into updating their facilities and processes to stay competitive businesses. The government already gave them extra time with the embargo but that isn’t going to last forever.

Expanding piracy, a pretty brutal form of robbery, to include ignoring digital media copyrights only really makes sense if you’re trying to vilify nonviolent criminals. I haven’t heard good arguments for more than 5-10 year copyrights.

TeX. I was able to use it during school for some beautiful type setting and formatting but nobody I work with wants to use anything other than plain text or unfortunately more commonly binary wysiwyg editor formats. It’s frustrating and ugly.

Went to the FedEx print shop a few months back. They directed me to a self help that wanted me to overpay or it wouldn’t print anything (blocks of payments, like 5/10/15 but the thing I wanted was like 7.89). I asked if they could do it for me instead so I could just pay for the thing I want and they said yes but would charge I think it was 2 bucks for assistance, still cheaper than the other overcharge but wtf. Just going to a locally owned place from now on after that ridiculousness.
