The way I see it, that number is a baseline figure for what their services would be offered for in exchange. If someone came up to me and said “here, I’ll give you $53 and in exchange you’ll let me surveil you for a year” I’d say no, but maybe someone else would’ve said yes. Then, as an experiment, maybe we can let the market take it from there, now that there’s a price and some form of discovery mechanism.

The piracy bugbear has been raised as the reason why corporations aren’t selling enough since mp3 was invented back in the day. It isn’t always the case. OnlyFans is pirated but the piracy doesn’t affect their bottom line enough to drive them out of business. If you think about it, lots of pornography on the internet is free, and they’re still okay. It’s a much more nuanced discussion than “piracy is stealing” than the corporations want you to think it is.
Edit: if I had to guess, the niche they serve or the value they add on top of “just porn” is something their customers are willing to pay for.
It’s true. Pragmatically speaking if you don’t have access to the server software you can’t play it if the servers go down, and besides reverse engineering or the goodwill of the developers I’m not aware of any games with online components that continue to be playable after their servers are taken down.
How many more of Google’s anticompetitive practices don’t we know about, I wonder?

I’m in full agreement with you and would prefer a completely flat phone with the extra space used for battery and cooling.
You will inevitably run into various minor issues like the fingerprint sensor not working very well, or face unlock is fiddly, or auto-brightness behaves strangely, or double-tap to wake has stopped working, etc etc.
Even Apple has to abide by the laws of physics. 3nm is fast, but a small, tightly packed, passively cooled device containing a large, heat generating element powered by a another large, heat generating element is unlikely to outperform a well ventilated, actively cooled device that is able to draw power from an outlet.
This is of couse ignoring the Apple reality distortion field, which in recent memory has succesfully perpetuated the idea that a tiny photo sensor can outperform a large one.
So, modest but capable hardware, and accessible pricing, enabled by scale and software sales. The modern handheld market might have had its roots in the revival of pocket PCs, but it’s by far at its strongest when it’s most console-like.
This is “the point” from the article, which is that we expect a portable handheld to provide an experience like a console portable handheld would, rather than a PC in a small form factor. My two cents is that I’ve found the Steam Deck’s “sleep” function to be very much like a console’s, and it’s not something that Windows does very well.
For some reason, Mullvad’s DNS doesn’t work on my phone so I’ve been using Quad9’s.
Everyone’s already mentioned the touchpads and SteamOS, but I’ve also not found any other device besides my Steam Deck that runs games as capably at 10W / 15W. That’s important for me in a handheld. Too bad the screen doesn’t support VRR or it’d have been perfect.
Would’ve preferred a version of this with a replaceable battery and no rear camera.
