- I owned a Xbox branded HDD that stopped working after 60 days. It was exactly 61 days. I had tried to get a refund at Best Buy where I bought it and they refused because their return policy said 60 days. - I simply refuse to purchase a Seagate product ever again. - Guessing this wasn’t in Europe. Consumer protection laws actually do stuff over here. Goods must be fit for purpose, and there’s no fixed limit for how long that is. A refund after two years wouldn’t be unreasonable for a hard drive and likely to succeed. - wasn’t in the US New England area either, we have consumer protections that block that type of fraud here.

- You know that drive has a 1 year warranty, right? - HDDs have a bathtub failure curve no matter who makes them.

- That is fucked up.
- I don’t think I’ve ever owned a Seagate drive in the last 20 or so years. Every time I’ve been shopping for a spinning disk, there has been some ongoing controversy surrounding Seagate in one form or another that turned me off buying one. - When I was putting together my NAS, WD was selling their NAS grade drives without disclosing they were SMR. They got hit with a class action for this. - They’re all trying shady shit, no HDD will run forever, no corporation cares about you, so use whatever you want and backup your data. - I have 114TB of Seagate drives right now and they’re fine. I’d use WD too, or HGST. The fanboyism around HDDs is so strange to me. - Yep I have a Seagate array and a HGST array and a WD array, and they’ve got 50k hours and are all fine (he said knocking on wood)

- isn’t that on the retailers though?
- So if seagate isn’t an option, and WD isn’t an option because of the SMR bait and switch, what hard drives are recommended? - Most high capacity drives are CMR, if that helps. - https://nascompares.com/answer/list-of-wd-cmr-and-smr-hard-drives-hdd/#WD_CMR_SMR_drive_list - Compare this with Backblaze drive stats to get a reliable product: - https://www.backblaze.com/blog/backblaze-drive-stats-for-q3-2024/ - Drives failures vary by model number more than by manufacturer. Buy seller refurbished drives from serverpartdeals if you don’t want the companies to get your money.
- Maybe a shuckled Western Digital you find new and at a good price? I’ve had a 12TB I shuckled, but is just one. And after 2 years is still going strong. - Thanks for replying. What does “shuckled” mean? - Pull them out of of an external HDD

- wtf The issue appears widespread, involving multiple retailers, including Amazon.
- Isn’t this at least the second time Seagate have been caught out selling used hardware as new?
- I just buy refurbished/refreshed drives intentionally. Recently picked up a 20tb drive for just under $200, and get a 5 year warranty with them too.
- Removed by mod - ?

- Much like how the current German government is just resold, used Nazi Germany - If you mean the AfD which are actual Nazis, they never had power yet but gain much more traction recently sadly. Even Elon Musk loves AfD but he a Nazi too, so no wonder things gained traction with his twitter/X. - Everything that were in government, was pretty left wing except the CDU which was… well they were lobbyistic but not that far right. But today they are. - SPD singnals left but turned right, FDP are also rightwing. The only option are greens who only partially forfilled their promise and the left which has a realy low chance of getting relevant results. - Oh, I didnt knew enough about SPD. I see. - The left seems like the most important choice. I hope they will be heared
