Which you can “Ackchyually” and end up with really interesting results.
For example, if it’s the animation studio that defines it, then Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is an anime, as it’s by Science Saru, the same studio responsible for Dandadan, and the netflix Castlevania is a cartoon.

This is a fun topic to discuss because in Japan, if I say anime, it defaults to “Japanese animation” but probably because that’s just the overwhelmingly dominant type. I don’t think anyone would bat an eye if I called something like Scott Pilgrim or Powerpuff Girls an anime here. Although, you might add the country of origin as a descriptor (カナダアニメ、アメリカアニメ, 中国アニメ, etc.).

The one exception I can think of is Disney. I think we call their works Disney movies or “Disney animation (アニメーション)”.

Jolly Roger, a personalized pirate flag is a jolly Roger. A generic one is the just referred to as the color of the flag, the black, the red, the green. You’d raise either version and your national flag if you’re a legit privateer, otherwise you’d strike your port flag or better yet raise a false port flag.
