I am already uncomfortable when my mom talks with her phone to search Google. But hey, she is 83 years old and her health is declining. Maybe she does not need so much privacy any more.
But here is a sad story: I have two friends, a couple. Both are automation engineers. They could not have kids, which was their life dream. So instead, they re-purposed their energy and built their dream house. A beautiful house. And, of course, with a lot of automation and logic programmed by them. Shutters which open in the morning and close when it is stormy. A shower which plays the right morning radio program. Extra settings for when parents-in-law visit.
But what makes me uncomfortable is voice control by speech recognition. All that cortana/siri stuff. For everything, even switching on the light. I don’t like that when I visit people. For me, it is like somebody is always listening, even to stuff that is meant only for my friends ears.
I have not told them, but I don’t like that house.
I’ll be honest, my biggest problem with something like this is that ai sophisticated enough to do anything useful cannot be run locally. That means every single time the clanker is asked to do something you are uploading significant amounts of personal information in an unencrypted form to some datacenter somewhere, for whoever to just do whatever they want with it.
People have been doing that with their Alexas all this time already. They have paid Amazon to bug their houses so they won’t have to press a light switch by hand anymore.

Lots of distros are similar to Windows in many ways. Some are specifically geared towards Windows-to-Linux migrants, or trying to be as close to Windows as possible. They are all much more customisable than Windows too, so you can change it to whatever works for you.
Linux Mint is often recommended to newcomers. Zorin OS is another good option that is more like Windows.

I like my PC being my PC. The more it does things I don’t ask of it or tell it to do, the more I will seek alternatives.
One of the most frustrating parts of MS products these days is that you’re just along for the ride. And unlike Apple which is just the same, MS has far less intuitive behaviour or method. I would say their products are for beginners or those not tech literate, but the failure rate and amount of complex troubleshooting required for MS products and environments are easily the most challenging and frequent. It does not help that Windows Update constantly introduces new issues to the OS and other software while undoing any previous workarounds.
That company doesn’t get to touch my stuff anymore. It’s like trusting your car to a four year old.
